The Vagus Nerve: Assessment, Therapy Techniques, and Clinical Applications

A nursing-focused course that connects vagus nerve anatomy, autonomic regulation, assessment principles, therapeutic approaches, clinical safety, and patient-centred care.

5.00 CNE Hours Accredited continuing nursing education.
IPCE Credit Planned for the healthcare team.
Online Learning Course content, clinical learning activities, quiz questions, and final assessment.

Course Description

This course introduces nurses to the clinical relevance of the vagus nerve and its role in autonomic regulation, stress physiology, respiration, digestion, heart rate variability, pain, inflammation, emotional regulation, and recovery. Learners explore how vagal tone and autonomic balance may influence patient presentation, communication, treatment tolerance, and self-management.

The course is designed to help nurses understand assessment concepts and therapy-informed strategies without overstepping professional scope. It supports safer clinical reasoning around when vagus nerve-informed techniques may be appropriate, when patient education and supportive care are the best nursing actions, and when symptoms require referral or medical review.

What You Will Learn

Clinical Relevance

Understand the vagus nerve as part of the autonomic nervous system and recognise why it matters in stress, recovery, pain, breathing, digestion, and regulation.

Assessment Principles

Consider patient history, symptom patterns, breathing behaviour, stress response, digestive symptoms, heart rate changes, dizziness, fatigue, and functional impact.

Therapy-Informed Support

Explore scope-appropriate strategies such as breathing awareness, grounding, pacing, education, relaxation support, and referral for appropriately qualified care.

Safety and Referral

Recognise red flags, autonomic instability, unexplained symptoms, trauma considerations, medication issues, and situations that require medical assessment.

Course Pathway

The learning pathway moves from core anatomy and clinical relevance into assessment, therapy-informed support, safety decisions, and practical application.

UnderstandReview the vagus nerve, autonomic regulation, and the body systems it may influence.
AssessNotice symptom patterns, triggers, tolerance, stress response, breathing, digestion, and function.
Confirm ScopeClarify what is permitted by role, region, policy, training, and competence.
Support or ReferUse education, pacing, calming strategies, referral, or escalation as clinically appropriate.
DocumentRecord findings, patient response, safety concerns, referrals, and follow-up needs.

Important scope note: Nursing scope varies by country, region, register, employer policy, job role, training, competence, consent requirements, supervision arrangements, and indemnity or insurance. Some nurses may be authorised to use selected therapeutic techniques in specific settings. Others may not. Learners must follow the requirements that apply to their own professional role and location.

Who This Course Is For

This course is suitable for nurses working in clinical practice, rehabilitation, primary care, pain management, mental health, community care, wellness, supportive care, and interdisciplinary settings. It is especially relevant for nurses who want to understand the clinical language of autonomic regulation, support patient comfort and self-management, recognise when vagus nerve-informed approaches may be useful, and identify when referral or escalation is needed.

In support of improving patient care, this course has been planned and implemented by AKH Inc., Advancing Knowledge in Healthcare and Neil Asher. AKH Inc., Advancing Knowledge in Healthcare is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 5.00 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credit for learning and change.
