Der Orbicularis oculi umgibt sowohl das obere als auch das untere Augenlid und wird als Schließmuskel beschrieben, der in konzentrischen Bändern organisiert ist.
Dieser komplexe und äußerst wichtige Muskel besteht aus drei Teilen – Tränen-, Orbital- und Lidspalten; zusammen bilden sie einen wichtigen Schutzmechanismus rund um das Auge. Der Tränenteil erweitert den Tränensack und bringt die Tränenkanäle auf die Augenoberfläche. Der orbitale Teil schließt die Augenlider stark (fest „verzieht“ das Auge) und der palpebrale Teil schließt sanft die Augenlider (und tritt unwillkürlich in Aktion, wie beim Blinzeln).
Darüber hinaus wird es verwendet, um Tränen vom Auge selbst in das Tränennasengangsystem zu übertragen.
Triggerpunkte können im Musculus orbicularis oculi auftreten und zu einem Spannungskopfschmerz beitragen.
