El síndrome piriforme ocurre cuando el músculo piriforme comprime el nervio ciático. Es un trastorno neuromuscular que es relativamente poco común.
Suele caracterizarse por dolor, entumecimiento u hormigueo en la región de los glúteos. También puede haber un dolor sordo o sensibilidad. En algunos casos, el dolor puede ser extremo y referirse a lo largo del nervio ciático y hacia la pierna (también conocida como ciática). El dolor puede desencadenarse al subir escaleras, levantar objetos pesados, estar sentado por largos periodos de tiempo o incluso al correr.
No existe una prueba única para esta condición. A menudo se da el caso de que ha habido un historial de trauma, tal vez por actividades vigorosas y repetitivas, como una carrera de larga distancia. Para diagnosticar el síndrome piriforme, sería necesario un examen físico junto con la descripción de los síntomas por parte del paciente. En algunos casos, puede ser necesario hacerse una resonancia magnética para descartar otras afecciones, como una hernia de disco.
