Course Description
With encouragement from governments, the media and celebrities; more people are donning their footwear of choice and walking their way to health and wellness.
We are using our smart devices to keep a tally of our movements aspiring perhaps to achieve the commonly quoted target of 10,000 steps a day.
Since taking our first unsteady steps in childhood walking is not usually something we give a second thought to (depending on your choice of footwear!).
Walking is repetitive and small errors can compound, mile after mile and day after day, to create problems. Poor technique, misalignment and myofascial imbalances are often at the root of orthopaedic injuries.
Perhaps running is your ‘bag’? And you are joining the couch to 5k or parkrun revolution. Now your body absorbs around three times your body weight with a greater frequency in turn compounding the potential for orthopaedic stress.
But what can we do when the simple act of walking goes wrong?
Should we wait until our clients experience pain or problems before we intervene and what are our treatment options when walking goes awry?
Objectives:
This course will help you understand the role and function of myofascia in normal gait.
We will explore the most efficient biomechanical paths that take advantage of the properties of myofascial chains.
We will cover the ‘essential events’ required to take place for ideal technique to be achieved and learn what commonly goes wrong.
We will examine a variety of tools and techniques to restore efficient movement and decrease the incidence of injuries.
We will cover:
- The role and function of fascia.
- Key myofascial and anatomical links through the body.
- Explain the sequence of essential events required for ideal walking technique.
- Key components of a biomechanical assessment including the biomechanics of the feet.
- Examine some common movement errors and injuries.
- Outline treatment of common injuries.
- Incorporate the role of core stability in management and prevention.
- Apply theory of myofascial chains into a selection of exercises to manage and prevent injury (strengthening, flexibility, motor control and coordination).
- Discuss contribution of footwear and the indications for orthotic correction.
You will learn how you can help yourself and your clients to enjoy sustainable physical activity in their work, leisure time and family life.
The concepts covered are based on the arts and science of Anatomy Trains, Biomechanics and Core Stability.
The course consists of over 2 hours of video tutorials, a 200 page illustrated text; " Born to Walk" and comprehensive 130 page course notes.
The course is presented by Phillipa Butler.
